After several trips to the Fuji Five Lakes, I’ve realized that Lake Kawaguchiko is far more spread out than it looks on a map – and where you stay can have a big impact on your experience.
There truly is nothing quite like waking up early in Kawaguchiko, pulling back your curtains, and watching Mount Fuji light up across the lake.
I remember the first time I did this, on my second trip to the region, and it remains to this day one of my favorite travel memories in Japan.
But recreating that experience isn’t as simple as booking any hotel with a view of Mount Fuji.
In reality, Lake Kawaguchiko is much larger than you might expect, with different areas offering very different experiences.
While some put you within easy reach of restaurants, shops, and public transit, others are ideal for scenic views, traditional ryokans, and a quieter stay.
And, depending on whether you’re exploring by public transportation or renting a car, some locations may be much more convenient than others.
That’s why, in this guide, I’m breaking down the best areas to stay in Kawaguchiko and what makes each one unique – plus, my top hotel and ryokan recommendations.
Whether you’re dreaming of waking up to views of Mount Fuji, planning a road trip around the Fuji Five Lakes, or looking for convenient access to restaurants and public transit, you’ll find the right fit here!

Short on time?
Here’s where I’d stay.
If I had to pick just one hotel, it’d be La Vista Fuji Kawaguchiko on the northern shore of the lake! I stayed here when my mom came to visit me, and we absolutely loved it. With beautiful views of Mt. Fuji, private open-air baths, and a calm, relaxing atmosphere, it’s a wonderful choice if you’re looking to make your stay in Kawaguchiko feel a little extra special.

The Best Areas to Stay in Kawaguchiko Explained
Without further ado, here’s my guide to the best places to stay in Kawaguchiko. I’ve also included hotel and ryokan recommendations for each area, taking into account location, views, amenities, traveler reviews, and overall value, with options for a range of budgets.
The Northern Shore: Lakeside Scenery & Mountain Vistas

Best For: Mount Fuji Views, Lakefront Stays, & Couples
The northern shore of Lake Kawaguchiko is not only my favorite place to stay – it’s also my top recommendation for travelers in search of the best views of Mount Fuji.
Here, you’ll find some of the most beautiful scenery in the Fuji Five Lakes region, with unobstructed vistas of Fuji-san towering over Lake Kawaguchiko.
The area is also home to some of the region’s most scenic spots, including Oishi Park, known for its seasonal flowers, and Nagasaki Park, a quieter lakeside escape.
And, of course, we can’t forget about the accommodations – many of which take full advantage of the scenery by offering mountain-facing rooms, lakeside balconies, and even open-air baths.
That said, some parts of the northern shore are farther from Kawaguchiko’s main transport hubs, making a rental car particularly useful if you want to explore the wider region.
While it’s still possible to stay here without a car, you’ll want to consider your accommodation’s location carefully if you’re relying on public transportation.
Consider Staying Along the North Shore If:
- You want some of the best views of Mt. Fuji, ideally from your hotel or ryokan.
- You’re looking for a scenic stay with easy access to some of the region’s most beautiful lakeside parks.
- You’d prefer a peaceful, romantic setting for a couples’ getaway or special occasion.
Consider Staying Somewhere Else If:
- You’re relying on public transit and prefer to minimize travel time around the lake.
- You’d like to have plenty of restaurants, shops, and other conveniences within walking distance.
- You’re looking for a livelier, more central base for exploring the Fuji Five Lakes region.

Kawaguchiko Station: Easy Access & Local Eats

Best For: Convenience, Car-Free Travel, & Foodies
The area around Kawaguchiko Station is one of the most convenient places to stay, especially if you’re planning to explore the Fuji Five Lakes without a rental car.
With bus connections to major attractions and plenty of restaurants and shops nearby, you’ll have many of the essentials you need within easy reach.
Restaurants, in particular, are a big bonus here, as dining options can be limited in some of the quieter, more remote areas around the lake.
That said, convenience does come with a trade-off: this is one of Kawaguchiko’s busier, more touristy areas, and it’s not the most scenic.
While you can still catch glimpses of Mount Fuji from the area (and from some hotels), the views here generally aren’t as expansive or unobstructed as those closer to the lake.
Consider Staying Near Kawaguchiko Station If:
- You’re relying on public transportation and would prefer easy access to local bus routes.
- You’d like to be within walking distance of local shops, restaurants, and cafes.
- You’re looking for a convenient, central base for exploring the Fuji Five Lakes region.
Consider Staying Somewhere Else If:
- You’d prefer a quieter, more peaceful setting away from the busiest tourist areas.
- You’d like to wake up to picture-perfect views of Mt. Fuji.
- You’re renting a car and would rather stay somewhere more scenic along the lake.

The Southern Shore: Relaxing Escapes & Natural Beauty

Best For: Quieter Stays, Scenic Drives, & Slow Travel
The southern shore of Lake Kawaguchiko is a great option if you’re looking for a laid-back place to stay, away from some of the busier tourist areas.
While you can still enjoy beautiful lakeside scenery, this side of the lake has a more relaxed feel, making it a good fit for travelers who prefer a slower pace and exploring by car.
One thing to keep in mind, though, is that Mount Fuji and the lake face opposite directions here.
So, you’ll likely have to choose which scenery you’d rather wake up to.
A rental car is also particularly useful here, especially if you’re staying farther west, where accommodations and attractions are more spread out.
Consider Staying Along the South Shore If:
- You’re looking for a more laid-back stay away from Kawaguchiko’s busiest spots.
- You prefer a slower-paced trip with time to relax and enjoy your surroundings.
- You enjoy taking scenic drives and discovering quieter corners of the region.
Consider Staying Somewhere Else If:
- You’re relying on public transportation and prefer to minimize travel time.
- You’d like to have restaurants, shops, and major attractions all within easy reach.
- You’re looking for views of Mt. Fuji rising up behind Lake Kawaguchiko.

Fujiyoshida City: Historical Streets & Local Life

Best For: Urban Charm, Cultural Sights, & Travelers Exploring Beyond the Lakes
Fujiyoshida City offers a completely different experience than what you’ll get if you stay closer to Lake Kawaguchiko.
It has more of an urban feel, with plenty of local restaurants, shops, and cultural sights like Arakurayama Sengen Park.
Best of all, you’ll be able to find some pretty iconic views of Mount Fuji here, particularly along the city’s historic Honcho Street.
Public transportation is also readily available, making it easier to explore without a rental car.
The main drawback here is that you’ll be farther away from the lake and its lakeside scenery.
This area is a better fit if you plan to explore beyond Kawaguchiko and would like to experience more of the surrounding region.
Consider Staying in Fujiyoshida If:
- You’d prefer a more urban atmosphere with local restaurants and shops within walking distance.
- You’re relying on public transit and would like easy access to the local bus lines.
- You plan to explore beyond Lake Kawaguchiko and its nearby attractions.
Consider Staying Somewhere Else If:
- You’d like to be close to Lake Kawaguchiko and its lakeside scenery.
- You’re looking for a quieter stay with Mt. Fuji views right from your accommodation.
- You’d prefer a nature-focused stay over a more urban setting.

Tips for Choosing the Best Place to Stay in Kawaguchiko

While Kawaguchiko is home to some incredible accommodations, a little planning can go a long way here. From booking early and choosing the right room to considering transportation, dining options, and the best time to visit, here are a few things to keep in mind.
- Book Your Accommodations Early: Kawaguchiko’s best hotels and ryokans, especially those with Mount Fuji views, can book up well in advance – particularly during cherry blossom season and in the fall. So, it’s best to reserve your accommodations as early as possible.
- Prioritize Transit Access: Kawaguchiko (and the broader Fuji Five Lakes region) is more spread out than it appears, and getting between attractions takes time. If you’re not renting a car, look for accommodations near a bus stop or train station, depending on which attractions you plan to visit.
- Be Mindful of Restaurants: Dining options can be limited in some parts of Kawaguchiko, and many restaurants close relatively early. Before booking, check what’s nearby and whether your hotel or ryokan has an on-site restaurant, especially if you won’t have a rental car.
- Plan Around Your Itinerary: Think about which attractions you most want to visit before deciding where to stay. If you’re planning to explore mostly around Lake Kawaguchiko, staying nearby can make getting around easier. If you want to explore more of the surrounding region, Fujiyoshida or Kawaguchiko Station can be good alternatives.
- Be Flexible with Your Dates: If your travel dates are flexible, compare prices across different days of the week and travel periods. Staying midweek or outside peak season may help you find better rates, especially at popular hotels and ryokans.
- Stay Longer for More Chances to See Mt. Fuji: Mount Fuji is often obscured by clouds, even on otherwise sunny days. Staying for multiple nights gives you more opportunities to catch a clear view – although visibility is never a guarantee.
- Choose a Room with a View: If waking up to Mount Fuji is part of your dream stay, double-check the room category before booking. Hotels may offer both Fuji-view and non-view rooms, and some views may be partially obstructed.

Where Else to Stay Around the Fuji Five Lakes

Although Kawaguchiko is the most popular base for exploring the Fuji Five Lakes, the other four lakes are worth considering, too, if you want to venture further afield. Public transportation is more limited in these areas, though, so renting a car is recommended. Here’s a quick look at what to expect from each lake:
- Lake Yamanaka: Known for its beautiful Mount Fuji views and resident swans, Lake Yamanaka is home to a decent variety of lakeside hotels and guesthouses. It’s a good alternative if you want to stay by the water while enjoying an atmosphere that’s a bit quieter than Kawaguchiko.
- Lake Saiko: A peaceful, nature-focused area surrounded by forests and mountains, Lake Saiko offers easy access to hiking trails, caves, and traditional Japanese villages. Accommodations here mainly feature campsites and vacation homes, making it a good fit for travelers looking for a more secluded escape.
- Lake Shōji: One of the smallest and quietest Fuji Five Lakes, Lake Shōji is home to only a handful of accommodations. However, its remote location makes it an ideal option for those who prioritize peaceful surroundings and scenic Mount Fuji views over convenience and choice.
- Lake Motosu: Known for its clear waters, iconic Mount Fuji views, and watersport activities, Lake Motosu is a great option for outdoor enthusiasts. Accommodation is limited, with most options consisting of cabins and campsites, making it best suited to travelers looking for a more nature-focused getaway.

Frequently Asked Questions About Visiting Kawaguchiko

Here are my thoughts on some commonly asked questions about planning a trip to Lake Kawaguchiko!
Is Kawaguchiko the Best Place to Stay to See Mount Fuji?
Yes, in my opinion, Lake Kawaguchiko is the best place to stay if you want to see Mount Fuji, especially if you’re relying on public transportation. It has the most convenient transport connections in the Fuji Five Lakes region, along with plenty of accommodation options, restaurants, and scenic views. The other lakes offer quieter alternatives, but getting around is difficult without a rental car.
How Many Nights Should I Stay in Kawaguchiko?
I’d recommend staying at least one night if you plan to focus exclusively on the Kawaguchiko area. However, if you’re hoping to explore the other lakes as well, it’s worth staying two to three nights, especially if you’re traveling by public transportation. A longer stay also gives you more chances to catch a glimpse of Fuji-san on a clear day!
Can I Visit the Fuji Five Lakes Without a Car?
Yes, you can visit the Fuji Five Lakes without a car, but getting around takes more planning. Kawaguchiko is the easiest base for car-free travel, thanks to its bus connections to major attractions. However, reaching the other lakes can be more time-consuming, and buses are less frequent. If you plan to explore beyond Kawaguchiko, I highly recommend renting a car for greater flexibility and the freedom to explore at your own pace!
Is It Better to Stay Near Kawaguchiko Station or Along the Lake?
It depends on what you’re looking for! Personally, I love the northern shore for its beautiful Mount Fuji views and lakeside scenery. However, if you’re relying on public transportation, staying near Kawaguchiko Station is more convenient, with easier access to buses, restaurants, and shops.
Should I Split My Stay Between Kawaguchiko and Another Lake?
For most travelers, I’d recommend using Kawaguchiko as your main base rather than splitting your stay between multiple lakes. However, if you’re renting a car and want to experience a quieter side of the Fuji Five Lakes, spending a night near Lake Yamanakako, Lake Saiko, or Lake Motosuko can be a nice addition to your trip. Just keep in mind that accommodation options are more limited around the smaller lakes.
What Is the Difference Between Kawaguchi, Kawaguchiko and Fujikawaguchiko?
It can be a little confusing, but these names are all associated with the same general area. Lake Kawaguchiko, which is the lake itself, is also known as Lake Kawaguchi, while Kawaguchiko on its own is commonly used to refer to the lake and its surrounding area. Fujikawaguchiko, meanwhile, is the name of the town where the lake is located. You’ll likely see these names used interchangeably when researching accommodation and attractions in the area.
Final Thoughts: Where to Stay in Kawaguchiko
After several trips to the Fuji Five Lakes, the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchiko remains my favorite place to stay, especially if waking up to beautiful views of Mount Fuji is high on your list.
However, the best area for you will depend on your priorities, whether that’s scenic views, convenient transportation, or a quieter escape surrounded by nature.
Regardless, you’ll find a wide variety of hotels in Kawaguchiko, ranging from budget-friendly stays to upscale resorts and traditional ryokans with private onsens and mountain views.
Just be sure to consider your location carefully before booking.
Kawaguchiko is more spread out than you might expect, and staying in the right area can make a big difference.
With a little planning, you’ll be well on your way to finding the perfect base for your Mount Fuji getaway.
